The Department of Psychology, Faculty of Health at York University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a tenure-track professorial stream appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, commencing July 1, 2022. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.
This position is open to qualified individuals who self-identify as Black peoples of African Descent (for example Africans and African heritage people from the Caribbean, Americas, Europe). The position is part of a cohort of Designated Black Faculty Hiring program across York University, which recognizes the underrepresentation of Black faculty, supports the University’s Affirmative Action program and is based on the special program provisions of the Ontario Human Rights Code. The successful candidate will be joining a vibrant scholarly community at York, where we aspire to achieve equity and diversity in all areas, including race equity.
We conceive of this position broadly, acknowledging the diversity of potential approaches and training backgrounds appropriate for this position. The appointee may specialize in the history of psychology with a focus on Blackness, race/racism/anti-racism; theoretical psychology (e.g. feminist, decolonial, queer, critical disability, critical race theory); or participatory community-based research informed by critical theory. Desirable research and teaching interests will address how individual and systemic factors interact to influence Black lives and examine psychology’s historical and ongoing relationship with social in/justice and in/equity.
The preferred candidate would have demonstrated expertise in critical qualitative inquiry, thus making needed contributions to methods training in the Department as a whole. Preference will be given to applicants who hold a PhD (or have completed one by appointment start date) in Psychology although doctoral degrees in a closely related field (e.g., Education, Africana Studies, Gender Studies, History, Philosophy) that included substantial training in psychology will also be considered.
The successful candidate will be expected to engage in outstanding, innovative, and, as appropriate, externally funded research at the highest level.
