Video: Jacques Lacan on Freud

Jacques LacanMind Hacks has alerted me to a 3+ minute clip of Jacques Lacan giving a (rather dramatic) summary of his position on “What Freud Discovered in the Unconscious.” I cannot say that I fully understand what he is getting at, but I have long thought that we historians — typically focused on textual documents — tend to undervalue the nondiscursive knowledge that can arise from visual and auditory records, primarily because of the technical challenges that reproducing them in books and journals (our standard communication vehicles) have traditionally posed. With the advent of the internet, this is no longer the case and we should now embrace them as documents of significance equal to that of manuscripts, letters, etc.
