An interesting article about peer review appeared in the Sept. 4 issue of The Guardian. The main object is the British Academy’s response to a critique of peer review issued last year by Research Councils UK. The coverage of the issue goes much further than that, however. Among other things, the British Academy recommends that the peer review system be shored up by giving the activity some standing in the tenure and promotion process. As one professor quoted in the article puts it, “this kind of activity counts for nix, nothing, zilch in the research assessment exercise.”
