Bibliography: Schizophrenia (2000-present)

The recent discussions about the “reality” of various modern psychopathologies (at the listservs hosted by Cheiron and the Society for the History of Psychology) — and especially the latest post at AHP about schizophrenia — raised questions regarding what it is that we’re trying to diagnose. Normally, this is where I would suggest that we could turn to history as a way of simplifying the problem.

As it turns out, however, there is a huge number of histories of schizophrenia. The following can therefore be considered “Part 1” of a much larger resource.

3 thoughts on “Bibliography: Schizophrenia (2000-present)

  1. A very useful bibliography on the history of schizophrenia. The Berrios et al. (2003) article is highly recommended as the first place to start for scholars approaching the problem. Two additional articles that will be published in the next few months are:

Introduction: From dementia praecox to schizophrenia. Classic Text: “Non-Dementia Non-Praecox: Note on the Advantages to Mental Hygiene of Extripating a Term,” by E.E. Southard (1919). History of Psychiatry, 2007, 18(4): in press.

Kraepelin’s “lost biological psychiatry?” Autointoxication, organotherapy and surgery for dementia praecox. History of Psychiatry, 2007, 18 (3): 301-319.

These, and others to follow, are sections of a forthcoming book on the history of dementia praecox in the United States I am currently writing that Harvard University Press is scheduled to publish in 2009.

  2. Useful resource for researchers, particualrly the historical ones.
